Cosmetic surgery overview

The goal of cosmetic surgery is to improve person’s appearance and self-esteem that was affected by certain skin condition or lack of satisfaction with the way they look. People usually identify cosmetic surgery with plastic surgery. However, they are two different areas of expertise.

Before we continue with discussing cosmetic surgery, it is important to explain the differences between cosmetic surgery and plastic surgery. Here they are:

  • Cosmetic surgery involves procedures, techniques and principles that are only focused on improvement of patient’s appearance. For example, improving their aesthetic appeal, symmetry, and proportions.
  • Plastic surgery is defined as a surgical specialty that is dedicated to the reconstruction of a body and facial defects that occurred due to birth, disease, accidents, traumas, burns, etc. Therefore, plastic surgery is associated with reconstruction of dysfunctional areas of the body.

Is cosmetic surgery safe?

cosmetic-facial-surgeryCosmetic surgery’s popularity keeps increasing, and the numbers show it. For example, more than $10 billion a year is spent in the United States on cosmetic surgery according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. One of the most sought after cosmetic surgeries is liposuction, and 30% of all liposuction patients are ages 19 to 39 according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Other popular cosmetic surgeries include breast implants, nose jobs, etc. It is assumed real numbers are even higher mostly because some women opt to travel abroad to undergo cosmetic surgery to avoid paying too much money.

The ever-increasing popularity of cosmetic surgery is worrying, even for surgeons who perform these procedures on the daily basis. Anne Wallace, chief of plastic surgery at the University of California in San Diego claims that the biggest fear to psychologists and surgeons is the fact that a great majority of patients aren’t fully aware of gravity and potential risks of cosmetic surgery procedures.

Just like with other procedures, cosmetic surgeries come with high risks as well. Whenever you disturb body’s balance, you create a risk creating new problem areas.

Possible effects of cosmetic surgery, for example, liposuction, were inspected by doctors Teri L. Hernandez and Robert H. Eckel of the University of Colorado. To inspect the possible negative effects of liposuction, they assigned participants, non-obese women to liposuction on their protuberant thighs and lower abdomen or to refrain from undergoing a procedure and serve as controls.

Results of the study were published in Obesity, and they showed that fat that was removed during liposuction eventually came back. It took a year for the fat to come back, but interestingly, it didn’t appear on women’s thighs. Instead, fat reappeared in participants’ upper abdomen, around shoulders, and triceps of the arms.

The president of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery praised the way the study was conducted and declared results would be provided to future patients in order to get informed about the good sides and bad sides of cosmetic surgery.

Liposuction is just an example. Every surgery (cosmetic or not) comes with different risks. Other, less invasive cosmetic treatments also come with certain side effects. For example, injecting Botox is never once enough. The patient has to go back to the doctor’s office and do it every three to four months. Moreover, cosmetic surgeries are usually pricey and they aren’t covered by health insurance which means they are too expensive for the average person to afford.

Is it possible to minimize signs of aging without cosmetic surgery?

smart-womans-guide-to-plastic-surgeryThe main reason women chose to undergo cosmetic surgery is because they want to look younger, but are convinced it’s impossible to achieve it in a natural way. To have a great-looking body, instead of liposuction you can always go to a gym, jog, or do other types of exercises coupled with healthy diet.
