The role sleep plays in the mood of human beings

Sleep plays an important role in regulating the human mood. With most people, sleep lifts mood. As a result, they are more happy than they would have been without a good night’s sleep.

Rapid Eye Movement (REM) Sleep

Rapid Eye Movement Sleep (REM Sleep) is the point where the most vivid dreams occur.

When people awake during REM Sleep, this will negatively affect their moods. Dreams early in the night tend to be less pleasant and sometimes much worse than their actual daily lives. As the night progresses, dreams tend to become more pleasant. It is not the content of the dreams themselves that lift mood, but some underlying process in the brain.

Another role of REM sleep is the regulation of emotions, such as hunger, sex drive and aggression. The strong flow of neural impulses that pass through the brain serve as a channel that regulates these emotions. People who lack sleep, or who have their REM sleep disrupted by drugs, noise or other distractions, tend to eat much more and are unable to control their impulses.

When people are deprived of a full night’s sleep

Imagine waking up after ten hours of sleep. You feel great, right? If you wake someone after three hours of sleep, they aren’t in the best of moods.

Lack of sleep can cause one to have headaches, loss of coordination and loss of certain knowledge. Depriving someone of sleep can also be a form of torture. This will affect one’s mood, and unfortunately, it’s usually in the worst way.

A person deprived of sleep will become more irritable, more likely to suffer from anxiety and less energized throughout the day.

To maintain good health, people need at least seven or eight hours of good quality sleep every night. Poor sleep, if consistent, will present risks of serious medial conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and being overweight.

Men who don’t get enough quality sleep have a lower sexual desire, and less of an interest in just about anything that is important.
