People who live to be in their 90’s, and those few who reach the age of 100 have the secret sauce. Have you ever wondered what that is? It’s very simple. They don’t worry about things that they have no control over. They are concerned with only 3 things. First, they take care of their bodies and overall health. Second, they don’t preoccupy their minds with things that are unimportant. Finally, they handle their emotions and don’t over-react to the things that are meaningless. Here’s how they do it.

Do a lot of walking   Walking is the best exercise that you can do. During the past week, I was talking to one of my cousins who I haven’t seen in years. He had a grandmother who lived to be 100. I asked him, “What was her secret?” His answer was, “Every time she went somewhere, she walked.” Walk as much as you can. It will add years to your life. When you go to the supermarket, park far away so you can walk more. Instead of riding an elevator, walk up the stairs. A better thing to do is go for a walk in the late afternoon. The more you walk, the better you’ll feel.

Dancing   You don’t have to go out on the town to a nightclub to do this. You can do it in the comforts of your own home. I’m sure you listen to good music occasionally. Don’t just listen. Get up and move around. Dance. Enjoy the music, and your body will benefit tremendously.

Go for a hike   Fall in love with nature. Get out, go to the woods, and appreciate the fresh air. At the same time, you will be actively engaging in an activity that will benefit you. Take a friend with you.

Swim   Many physical therapists will tell you that this is the best exercise you can do. When you swim, you use muscles you never thought you had. After you’ve finished, you will feel so relaxed and rejuvenated. Go to your local YMCA, or Health Club. Besides keeping your body in good shape, you will also meet people and make new friends.

Give someone a hug   This may seem like an emotion, but giving someone a hug is very physical. When you do this, you will have a good feeling about yourself, and so will the person you give the hug to. Feeling good about yourself is very important when keeping your body in tip top shape.

Do chores around the house   Doing something productive is very important to the body. When you’re young, and get into the habit of doing things for yourself, it will carry over to your old age. The more you do this, the more you’ll want to do it.

Do light exercises before getting out of bed   A few years ago, I asked 10 women in their 90’s how they were able to live so long. 3 of the women said that, before getting out of bed in the morning, they do a few exercises. You can do this too. Do a few sit ups. Another good exercise to do in bed is to raise your head, rotate it and exercise your neck. Do this, and you will be revived and rejuvenated for the remainder of the day. Believe me, this works like a charm.

Take a shower every day   A good shower peps me up more than anything. This will make you feel good about yourself. When you take care of your body, you want it to be clean. Taking a shower will make you appreciate your body much more, and give you a very good feeling about yourself.

5 things that will improve your mind

Read   You can read a good book, a magazine article, or even browse the internet. It doesn’t matter what you read. The purpose is to acquire knowledge that you don’t have. It doesn’t matter if you’re 9 or 90. As long as you’re living and breathing, you’re learning. Learn as much as you can while you’re on this earth. This is one of the best ways to stimulate the mind. Here’s some food for thought. There are more things we don’t know than there are we do know. This can be said for everyone, even the smartest person in the world, whoever this may be.

Learn a new skill   Again, you’re never too old to learn. If you’re in your 60’s, and want to pursue a new career, go for it. It’s never too late. As long as you’re breathing, you’re living. Live life to the fullest by doing the things you want to do, and enjoy. Make every minute count.

Do a DIY project   If you have a room that needs painting, don’t hire a painter. Do it yourself. Better yet, wallpaper the room. Get interested in Arts and Crafts. There are numerous do-it-yourself projects you can pursue. Never assume you can’t do something just because you’ve never done it before. No matter what you want to pursue, you can learn how to do it. And when you actually do it, you will have a tremendous feeling of accomplishment. This is a great feeling.

Turn the phone off   I don’t mean that you should do this 24 / 7. When you’re doing something that you enjoy, you don’t want any distractions. Unfortunately, many people are held hostage by their cell phones.

Color   Coloring books are not just for children. They’re for anyone who wants to use them. Learn to paint. Try water coloring. This will not only occupy your mind with something positive and enjoyable. This will keep your mind sharp.

Write down 5 things you are grateful for   This is very important. When you wake up in the morning, make this the first thing you do. If you’re like many people who have to have that first cup of coffee right out of bed, have it while writing these things. People who carry around baggage should especially do this. Unnecessary baggage and anger keep people from being the best they can possibly be. When these people shift their thinking from negative to positive, good things start happening for them. Be grateful for what you have instead of angry for what you may not have. It will make a difference in your life. Finally, do this every day.

Keep a journal   This is very powerful. Keep your journal in the same notebook with the 5 things you are grateful for. When I say journal, I’m not talking about facts and figures. It’s more like a diary. Write down anything you want to write about, how you feel, what’s happening in your life. If there’s something troubling you that you don’t want to talk about to someone, write it in your journal. No one will see it but you. Keeping a journal is very different from talking to people. When talking to others, you have to clarify what you’re saying so they will understand. In your journal, remember, you’re talking to yourself. You don’t have to clarify anything you write because you know what you mean. Just let the pen take over. When you discover the things that you will learn about yourself, you will be amazed.

Talk with a friend   When something is bothering you, it’s sometimes better to talk to someone about it. Instead of a family member, talk to a friend. This will give you an unbiased perception of the problem. Talking to someone about a problem will get it out in the open, and give you a much better chance to resolve it.

Meditate / pray   Clear your mind. Think about what’s going on. Don’t try to meditate while your mind is preoccupied with other things. Most people think the only way to pray is to talk to God with words. This is not necessarily true. This is just one type of praying. Just sit down, relax and meditate of why you, me and everyone else is here. Think about the things you are grateful for, and remember who is responsible. Think about that first Christmas. Remember the Child who was born. Think about how all of us who have been born since have carried His mark.
